Managing Media

Overview of Managing Media

Media are the stock items (specific paper, envelopes, and labels) available to Print Shops on your site. Administrators can usemedia in defining new products and ticket templates and buyers can select from availablemedia when ordering a print job (e.g., a buyer wants to have stationery printed on a 60 lb. buff stock). The Media Catalog page is where you will definemedia available for building products.

Note: In MarketDirect StoreFront a large format job is defined as any print job on amedia that exceeds 22" (559mm) in width or height (or both). So, for instance, anymedia in your catalog that exceeds 22" (559mm) on any dimension will be in the large format class for pricing purposes.

Media are specific combinations ofmedia attributes, such as:

         size

         color

         weight

         hole pattern

         type

MarketDirect StoreFront ships with pre-definedmedia such as Address Labels, US Legal, US Letter, etc. You can add, edit, or delete media so that the Media Catalog accurately represents the stock available to one or more Print Shops in your site. Eachmedia also has characteristics: size, color, weight, hole, and types. In most cases, you can create newmedia by using existing characteristics. If you need to add a new characteristic, the system permits you to add these.

The Media Catalog

The Media Catalog has six tabs, each of which lets you manage a different aspect ofmedia in MarketDirect StoreFront. Click on a bordered tab on the image below to open the Help topic for that tab.

Before using themedia catalog, create a list of all themedia for each of your Print Shops. Divide themedia into broad categories. You may want to use the system’s pre-installed media or you may want to create your own. Keep in mind that your users may not be experts with types of paper or specialized printing terms. For example, they will benefit from generic, easily recognizable types such as Letterhead, Resumé, Heavy, etc.

Warning: Adding newmedia types and colors is not recommended. When sending data to the MicroPress, External System Connector, an MIS, or the Fiery, newmedia types are sent as “Paper” and some colors may be sent as “White.” This is for backward compatibility with previous versions of those external systems.
